I think a lot of times we get off track. We think it is the outward that makes us non-conformist. When, in reality, the outward is merely a manifiestation of the inward. If we are non-conformist on the inside our approach to everything changes and therefore what we do becomes non-conformist.

Simon Sinek calls it our "Why". We focus too often on our "What" and "How" when really non-conformity is about our "Why".Jason Ansley

Cool is what cool does.

Cool doesn't even care if itself is cool. It is for sure nonconformist.

If I'm understanding you correctly, Megyn, you're saying a couple things. First 'nonconformists' are simply people who are rejecting one set of rules to embrace another (so they're actually conformists). Secondly, you're taking issue with our strong stance against doing things out of obligation. You contend that unless people embrace obligation, societal norms will crumble.

To your first point, you're clearly correct. It's all a matter of perspective. We've chosen to self-label as 'nonconformist' because a) we've had it with the way our culture expects our lives to play out, and b) we're not 'joining' a specific group. To me, 'NonConformist' fits that pretty damn well.

To your second point, I think you're also technically correct technically, I guess. But, to be honest with you, Megyn, you're completely missing the point.

Not bowing to obligation speaks more about being intentional about life - not letting others make decisions for you. We are making choices to align the different elements of our day to day lives with our convictions. We are choosing to live out our belief system, our perspectives.

We argue that life is too short to waste, that our uniqueness is best utilized in community, and that faith deserves to be life's foundation. I recommend you check out this recent post for some more clarity, Megyn: http://www.thenonconformistfamily.com/2012/05/06/the-great-nonconformist-hoax/

Thanks for your response!

I like what you said about my heart being in process... I haven't ever put it in terms that clear before - I really like it! With this post, it's really sinking in for me that I'll always be evolving. In fact, I don't want to reach a point in this life where I've 'arrived'. To me, that sounds really boring.

Great question, Dr. Zaius/Jon!

In a lot of ways, that's the question WE have as well. Regardless of what our life looks like in the future (cause let's be honest - it could be anything), we're committed to a) living with intention, and b)pursuing our best possible life.

Those two things won't ever change.

Sorry for the non-answer type of answer!

Dude, JVWM said you're legit. Well done.

I know you bro and I know your heart is in process. It does start with some behavior changes and some dreams and then after you question yourself every single day you start to come to a realization that you're on a journey and you're willing to admit it and embrace it. That's non-conformity...admitting that you want more and then doing something about it. Just keep shipping bro, that's the grease that keeps your dreams moving.

More power to you, buddy.

For me, I've just enjoyed watching you guys take this ride and wish you the best. I'm a happy spectator, and as you go about redefining your path it's gonna continue to be a whole lot of fun for us out here.

Keep truckin', Gordons!

We've been pretty close to the "without hope" place and it is no good. We have already seen good things coming from not getting that place.

We find we need to have hope generally but also for specific areas of our lives. Like, yes, we will get out of debt. It is a process and a journey and it doesn't happen all at once.

Before Vonnie and I started on our path to eliminate our debt, I felt completely without hope. It was a horrible feeling that I wish to never experience again. Without hope, you're completely lost. You were shown this place (and didn't get it) for a reason...you may not understand why now, but you will someday.

I love your response to Emily that your "hope is built around a belief that there's Someone looking out for us..." You'll find that new place to live...and when you do, look up and make sure you tell that Someone, "Thanks!" :)

Thanks for the encouragement, Emily!

Our hope is built around a belief that there's Someone looking out for us... We get that not everyone understands or agrees with that, but we're discovering that the Hope that our relationship with God brings has ushered in to our life a new richness and sense of adventure.

And yeah, getting our rental application rejected is a bummer - but it's definitely NOT the worst thing to happen to us. It's good to keep things in perspective.

Hope and perspective, right?

- Josh

Just found your site via Jenny @Ex-Consumer. It's funny because we are the same age in similar scenarios (young parents with 2 young children...ours are almost 2 & almost 4, and The Hubs thankfully got a big V, so no more EVER! Thank heavens!), but having been a non-conformist my entire life (yes, all 26 years of it), I've come to some dissimilar conclusions. Your #2: "Obligation is not a valid reason for action" is not for every scenario. Take children, for example. They are an obligation, and should none of us want to take on that obligation, the majority would not survive. Sometimes obligations forces us into action, but it's for the better of the species. Also, I kind of get grumpy with non-conformists because, despite not conforming to traditional cultural things, you are now conforming to a group, just with different principles. Make sense? I've thought and re-thought all aspects of non-conformity for my entire life, and what I've realized is that the vast majority are not fully conforming. We are all non-conformists in one way or another.

I really like how you choose to live transparently with this blog. It is refreshing!
I could not agree more with your thoughts on community. This has changed our family this year. We've found that our community group (from church) is where we openly discuss our thoughts, our decisions, and the rhythms of our lives. A community within a larger community where we discover and delight in the glory of God. These are the folks that constantly remind us about the freedom that comes from knowing and living the reality of the gospel. Thanks for this post!
